JoAnn Martens, DDS, and her staff are dedicated to protecting your oral health through general dentistry while providing a stress-free experience. As a child, Dr. Martens suffered from a dental phobia, so she is sensitive to the anxiety that many people feel when visiting the dentist. This is one reason that Dr. Martens is committed to helping her patients feel at ease when undergoing dental treatment.
Dr. Martens treats a wide range of patients, between the ages of 3 and 103. For the past four years, she has received the “Best Dentist” and “Best Customer Service” awards from readers of the Waunakee Tribune. Dr. Martens and her staff emphasize personalized patient and dental care, which means that they are committed to helping you understand your treatment options and choose the one that is right for your unique oral health needs. Best of all, Dr. Martens provides top-quality general dentistry treatment options that you can afford.

The Waunakee family dentist offers a variety of comprehensive general dentistry treatments, from cleanings that make your teeth sparkle to corrective dental procedures that restore your dental health. The following are some of the general dental treatments that Dr. Martens offers to protect or improve her patients’ oral health:
- Semi -annual dental exams
- Dental X-rays
- Routine cleanings
- Fluoride treatments
- Cavity fillings
- Root canal assessments
- Periodontal (gum) disease evaluations
- Orthodontics, such as Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles®
If you are suffering from tooth pain, have a concern about your oral health or simply have not been to the dentist in a while, contact Dr. Martens for help. She will perform a dental exam and take dental X-rays before recommending any necessary treatment to maintain or improve your oral health.
If you require root canal therapy or treatment for various stages of periodontal disease, Dr. Martens will refer you to a specialist (e.g., endodontist for root canal therapy, periodontist for gum disease) that she knows and trusts, who treats those specific dental problems every day, all day. She will also provide patient education along the way, showing you ways you can care for your oral health at home to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

JoAnn Martens, DDS, LLC, is a family dentist with many years of experience treating both children and adults, from the ages of 3 to 103. Because Dr. Martens had a fear of the dentist as a child, she understands the anxiety that many children (and adults) feel when they are due for a dentist visit — but she can turn that fear around, thanks to her caring, patient demeanor that carries through to her staff as well. At the family dentistry practice of Dr. Martens, the dentist and her staff are dedicated to caring for children’s teeth and overall oral health, from age 3 through their teenage years and beyond, while helping them feel at ease.
How Does Dental Treatment Differ for Kids and Adults?
Children have different oral health needs than adults. They may not yet have a full set of their primary teeth when they start visiting Dr. Martens, or they may practice certain childhood habits that can affect their dental health, such as sucking their thumb or fingers. Children may benefit from fluoride or sealant treatment or require orthodontic work as they enter adolescence.
In addition, young children may have a hard time sitting still in the dentist’s chair, or, as mentioned above, they may feel scared of going to the dentist. Dr. Martens has special dental tools and techniques that are designed with children in mind, to make the entire experience as quick and easy as possible.
When Should Kids Visit the Dentist for the First Time?
Dr. Martens likes to see children and encourages them to seek routine dental treatment as soon as they have all of their baby teeth. One reason is that tooth decay (also called dental caries, or cavities) is the most common chronic disease among kids between the ages of 6 and 11 and among adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19. Another important reason for children to start visiting Dr. Martens early on in life is that it helps establish good oral hygiene habits early, so they can maintain a healthy smile over a lifetime.
